Mary L.C. McAdoo
(December 3, 1928 – February 4, 2025). At Bryn Mawr, PA. Beloved wife of the late Robert C. McAdoo and the late F. Woodson Hancock, Jr., and loving mother to F. Woodson (Leslie) Hancock, III, Morris C. (Lin) Hancock, Mary H. (Mark) Rippel and Thomas A. (Jane) Hancock. She is also survived by seven grandchildren.
“Minky”, as she was known, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania the oldest child of Morris Cheston and Caroline Ashton Cheston and grew up near Ambler, PA. She first attended Miss Zara’s School in Chestnut Hill, moving on to Springside School and then graduating from the Foxcroft School in Middleburg, VA in 1946. Afterwards, she went on to the University of Pennsylvania.
In 1948, she married F. Woodson Hancock, Jr., of Valley Forge, PA, and settled down to the life of a wife, mother and volunteer. She enjoyed spending summers in North Haven, Maine. A dedicated and life-long Episcopalian, she was a member of The Church of the Redeemer in Bryn Mawr, where she was active in several areas.
Widowed in August 1991, she married Robert C. McAdoo of Bryn Mawr, PA in January 1995. They enjoyed life together until his death in August 2021.
Minky’s great passion was figure skating. She was an active member of The Philadelphia Skating Club and Humane Society in Ardmore, PA for much of her life, participating in club ice dancing competitions. She also served as the club’s president, and during her long involvement came to know a number of well-known figure skaters.
Her deep love of music led her to become a member of the Board of Directors of The Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, she was active in the YWCA of Philadelphia and served also as a member and the Pennsylvania delegate to the Mount Vernon Ladies Association, the group of 50 women (one from each state) that owns and operates George Washington’s home in Virginia.
She was a member of the Acorn Club, which she served as president, The Planters Garden Club, the Gulph Mills Golf Club and the Merion Cricket Club.
Friends and family are invited to a Memorial Service celebrating her life on Friday, February 14 at 12 noon at the Church of the Redeemer, 230 Pennswood Road, Bryn Mawr. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to Episcopal Community Services, 225 S. 3rd Street, Philadelphia, PA. 19106
