She met the love of her life, Jack, in Sunday School at the Summerfield Methodist Church when they were only 14. Mary and Jack were married for more than 70 years and lived, loved and laughed together as a single soul for almost eight decades.
Mary loved bringing together and being a part of her family. As a mother she loved to host family gatherings for all holidays and personal milestone events. She was an accomplished baker and fulfilled many dessert requests for holiday, birthday and family gatherings. Mary set an example by being an active member in her community serving various leadership and support positions in the Somerton Women’s Club, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Philadelphia voter outreach and Meals on Wheels in addition to the many support roles she served in her family’s activities. Mary also loved the outdoors and was an accomplished gardener, enthusiastic camper and avid fisherwoman.
She celebrated the accomplishments of her children, grandchildren and loved ones as if they were her own. She attended virtually every concert, little league game, marching band event, school play, scout ceremony and significant event of her grandchildren with her husband Jack.
Mary was also an accomplished seamstress, hand-making beautiful quilts for her family and anyone she knew that was having a baby. She also knitted, crocheted, made clothing and was always an enthusiastic teacher to anyone interested in learning these skills. Mary along with her husband Jack, supported her children in every way possible with her skillsets, emotional support, love and dedication to the well-being of her family.
Mary had an adventurous spirit. She travelled alone to Italy to assist her daughter after the birth of her granddaughter. Mary and Jack took many vacations to Bermuda, Arizona, Myrtle Beach, the Mid-Atlantic states, and New England. Many times, their car-trips were with friends, often taking the road less travelled.
Mary’s love, stamina and commitment to family and life will be missed by all who loved and knew her.
