Martha Breiden
Martha Breiden, nee Harold, died on January 25, 2022 at her residence at Foulkeways in Gwynedd where she had been a resident for the past 18 years. Raised in the Philadelphia area, Martha was a graduate of Germantown Friends School and Randolph Macon Woman’s College. After graduating college Martha discovered a passion for teaching when she took a temporary job teaching French at the Solebury School in New Hope. She went on to earn her Master’s Degree in European history from the University of Pennsylvania in 1968. From 1969 to 1988 Martha taught a wide range of liberal arts classes at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia including eastern and western history, religion, and philosophy. She loved her students and they loved her. Upon her retirement Martha was presented with a Citation of Distinction in recognition of the devotion and wisdom she brought to her teaching. Martha and her husband of 58 years, Millard (deceased) lived in Chestnut Hill from 1960 to 1992. Martha was an active member of the Church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields where she served on the vestry for many years. Martha’s teaching schedule allowed her to spend summers at her beloved lakeside cabin in Maine with Millard, and sometimes their children and grandchildren. Martha is survived by her sister Jean Dolph of Springhouse, her son Lawrence, her daughter Nancy Breiden (Steven Zwicky) and 2 grandsons, Dylan Zwicky (Kayla Ciampa) and Miles Zwicky. Memorial donations may be made to the Montgomery County SPCA, 19 E. Ridge Pike, PO Box 222, Conshohocken, PA, 19428.
I am so sorry to hear about Martha. I saw her often when she visited Larry at The Stanbridge and later at Foulkeways. She was a wonderful. Gifted woman and will be greatly missed. Sending Love to you all. Tommie ( Wolf, Hallquist, Warder).
