Joan H. Torello

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Joan Torello, a beloved mother, sister, aunt, and friend, who left this world surrounded by love at her home following a stroke. Joan was born on March 29, 1939, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Henry (Hank) and Elizabeth (Betty Blue) Huber. She lived a life filled with love,
laughter, and generosity.

 

Joan was a remarkable woman, known for her friendliness and good humor. Her ability to make friends easily and keep them for a lifetime was a testament to her warm nature and her unwavering kindness. Joan would do anything for anybody, always ready to lend a helping hand or a listening ear. Her love for entertaining brought joy to everyone
around her, leaving lasting memories for all who had the privilege of knowing her.

 

She graduated from Haverford High School in 1957 and worked diligently to support her husband through his studies at Drexel University by working at Bell of PA. Joan found joy and fulfillment in her career at Hirshorn Insurance Company in Chestnut Hill, where she spent many happy years.

 

In October 1957, Joan married the love of her life, Peter Torello. Together, they shared over 50 wonderful years, filled with adventures and shared passions. They found great joy in camping, cycling, gardening, and ice skating, making cherished memories with friends at
the Wissahickon Skating Club. Joan and Pete’s adventurous spirit led them on major camping trips to 49 states and they rounded out the travel list to Hawaii and Europe via air travel. Their most extensive camping excursions were two trips to Alaska. Joan loved documenting all their trips via photos and journals and sharing them with others.

 

Joan and Pete enjoyed riding their bikes with the “Old Spokes” at Normandy Farms Estates, where they resided and participated in many activities over the years. Joan had a lifelong love of music and filled the house with her favorite tunes on the stereo, playing the
piano, singing in church choirs, and playing handbells. She could conjure up a song from almost any subject and would joyously start singing it.

 

Joan was a dedicated member of the Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill, where her absence will be deeply felt. She will be interred alongside her beloved Pete in the memorial garden at the church where they shared so many moments of faith and community.

 

Joan was predeceased by her loving husband, Peter, her parents, and several longtime friends from high school. She is survived by her devoted children, daughter Sharon Torello, and son Scott Torello; and her brother Henry (Chick) Huber.

 

A memorial service will be held to honor Joan’s life on August 28, 2026, at 2pm at Normandy Farms Estates. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Normandy Farms Estates, the compassionate hospice workers, and all those who provided care and support to Joan in her final days.
