Marie A. Sanderson
Marie A. Sanderson (nee Nardone), 76, of North Wales, Pennsylvania, passed away on April 27, 2023, after a brief illness.
Marie was born on January 29, 1947 to Anthony and Helen Nardone (nee Catalano) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She enjoyed her time growing up in the 49th Street neighborhood near University City, running around with her sister Rose (Verdile) and cousins Nick and Elaine (Colantonio) and Franny (Sereno). She enjoyed weekend excursions to Wildwood Crest, learning the Italian cooking and baking traditions from her mother and aunts, and finding her love of singing and dancing.
After graduating from the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur in 1964, Marie attended Rosemont College earning a degree in psychology. She moved to New Jersey shortly after college and over the years worked in a variety of roles as an employment counselor, bank teller, and teacher’s aide, and volunteered as a hospice worker, always looking for opportunities to help others.
Her true love was her kitchen, making epic Italian meals of meatballs, “manigot” and escarole soup, and whipping up a variety of treats from pizzelles to her family favorite 1-2-3-4 cake. She later captured these recipes and many more in a family cookbook, collaborating with her sister and three Catalano cousins. Copies can be found in the kitchens of her relatives, dog-eared and much used and loved. When not in the kitchen, Marie enjoyed singing and recording songs for her grandchildren, and traveling with her cousins, especially to the beaches of California and Florida.
Beloved mother to Edward (Sandy) and Molly (Arnason) Sanderson, and Scott and Kristin (Woodcock) Sanderson and Gram to Charlie (14), Toby (13), Teddy (12) and Mia (10), she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Relatives and friends are invited to Marie’s visitation on Thursday, May 4th, 2:00 to 4:00 pm at Chestnut Hill United Church, 8812 Germantown Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19118, followed by a memorial service at 4:00 pm. Marie’s interment will follow on Friday, May 5th, 10:00 am at Holy Cross Cemetery in Yeadon, Pennsylvania for immediate family members. Marie was a creative and caring person who saw performing opportunities in life whether on the stage or in the kitchen. She brought joy to the lives of many people, including us. She will be missed.
A beautiful tribute to a sweet woman. I love learning the parts of her background that I didn’t know about from her youth. The first time I met Marie was at Scott and Kristin’s bridal shower and at a large party she threw with music and dancing , her love, in New Jersey. I remember from my sister, all the stories about the Italian family dinners and the seven fishes celebration at Christmas time with Scott, my sister, and family. I’ve seen the cookbook and it is so full of memories. It was such a beautiful gift given at the time of Scott and Kristin’s marriage. Marie and Rose loved cooking together, I know. I know everyone will remember their fond memories. Goodbye Marie. Love to you, Anne Horrigan
