George A. Butler Jr.
George Butler was born in 1935 and lived the first two years of his life in the Swampoodle neighborhood of Philadelphia. Then from the late ‘30s to the mid ‘20s he lived in his family’s home in Mt. Airy. George was a man of boundless curiosity. He loved geology, geography, physics, and, perhaps, above all else, photography. He developed an expertise in the science of photography and in the process of developing captured images. It didn’t take him too long to convert of one the rooms in his house into a dark room devoted to developing photographs.
He also enjoyed less scientific pursuits, like figure skating, modeling, and the comedy of legends such as W.C Fields and Laurel and Hardy. And anyone who spent even a few minutes with him could be sure to have heard some of his many, many jokes—some truly terrible and some truly great—but all with a spirit of love and good humor.
He enjoyed his many summers in Ocean City, New Jersey, where he and his family owned a house. George loved the beach and the long days of sunshine.
A graduate of Holy Cross Parish School, LaSalle High School and College, George valued his Catholic faith. In fact, he met his wife Margaret while both served as lectors at Holy Cross Parish. Their life together was very happy and drew considerable energy from Margaret’s art work and their shared reading of theology.
George was a lawyer, practicing for nearly 60 years. He worked with his father and brother in a firm found on the 10th floor of the PSFS Building called Butler, Butler & Butler. He enjoyed getting to know people in the city, relishing long lunches at the Reading Terminal.
George was a lover of life, and we, his family and friends, mourn his loss but cherish his example.
Butler, George A., Jr., 88, of Mt. Airy, died peacefully on March 11, 2024. Beloved husband of the late Margaret Butler (nee Matt). Cherished brother, uncle, and great uncle to many. Relatives and friends are invited to George’s visitation Saturday, March 16, 10-11 a.m. at Our Mother of Consolation Parish in Chestnut Hill. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in George’s name may be made to Facetofacegermantown.org
