Flora MacDonald Turner
Flora MacDonald Turner, aged 80, died September 2, 2023, while in hospice care near her home in Philadelphia, PA. Flora was born March 7, 1943, in Philadelphia, PA to James Cyrus and Flora MacDonald Hollowell Turner. She was the eldest of eight and is survived by one sister, Joanna; five brothers: James C. Jr, Christopher, Joel, Geoffrey, and Jonathan; two stepsons: Michael and David Barker; four nieces, six nephews, five grandnieces and four grandnephews. Flora earned a BA from Rosemont College in 1965, and an MEd in Special Education and a
Principal’s Certificate from Temple University. After college, Flora worked for a short time at the Theater of the Living Arts in Philadelphia before beginning her first teaching position with the new federally funded program, Head Start. While at Head Start (later Get Se in Philadelphia), Flora discovered her passion for working with children with developmental and learning disabilities and began a decades-long career in Special Education, serving more than 40 years as a teacher and administrator for the School District of Philadelphia. Flora’s family and closest friends will gather for a private celebration of Flora’s life. Donations in Flora’s honor should be made to the Montgomery County SPCA or to the Arc of Philadelphia.
Flora was my classmate at Rosemont. She was smart and funny. I enjoyed being in her company. She and I were both the oldest of eight. I am delighted Flora had a distinguished career in education in Philadelphia–then and still my home. God Bless her.
