DR. JOHN HOOVER WAS MY FIRST SUPERVISOR AT SMITHKLINE AND FRENCH. HE LEFT AN INDELIBLE MARK ON ME AS HE WAS A STERN DISCIPLINARIAN AND AN EXTREMELY KNOWLEDGEABLE CHEMIST. HE IS ALSO RESPONSIBLE FOR SAVING 4 OF THE MEDICINAL CHEMISTS THAT WORKED FOR HIM IN 1968. ALL 4 WERE EXPOSED TO HYDROGEN CYANIDE AND THE SCOTT AIR PAK HAD JUST BEEN INVENTED. HE ACTED QUICKLY TO SAVE THEIR LIVES AND INJECTED ALL 4 WITH SODIUM THIOSULFATE TO REVERSE THE EFFECTS OF CYANIDE POISONING AND SUCCESSFULLY SAVED ALL 4 MEN’S LIVES. THIS IS QUITE EXTRAORDINARY AS HE WAS NOT AN MEDICAL DOCTOR ICAN STILL REMEMBER THIS LIKE IT WAS YESTERDAY

  • Wonderful testimonial and remembrance of John. Condolences to Janet and the family. I had the privilege of working with John for many years at Smith Kline and French Labs. He was both an inspiration and a mentor, and a very progressive thinker. He held high standards and expected the same of those of us who reported to him. Always a creative thinker, he served those of us who knew very well. As a young person, just beginning my career in chemistry, I shall be forever grateful to him for sharing his patience and breadth of knowledge with an enthusiastic student of the art of chemistry. Thank you John, for your friendship and kindness.. May you rest in peace.
